Teaching in Ashram 11

As said by Mahatma Gandhi
“The future depends on what we do in the present.”

We were working hard on our students from many days and were working for not only the future of children but also for the future of planet. As if each individual get sufficient knowledge to take decisions considering all also, working as a global human resource. It was last visit for DP2 to Van Vasi Ashram. I prepared test for my student (Raja) on all the topics I thought him to see who much he learnt? I was very excited and full of enthusiasm. When I reached I was informed by the in charge of the ashram that Raja is busy studying for the exam he was having in next two days. All my work and struggle went in vain and my dreams were shattered. But as said “Never Say Never” I worked with Nishad and helped him. I learnt many new techniques of making someone understand from him. It also improved my as well as his teamwork skills. Hoping for the best and wishing all my classmates and all the students all the best for their exams.

Teaching in Ashram 10

Hard to believe but, it happened second time that my student was not with me. I have only one student and he was not well. He was unable to leave his bed and asked me for “no study” today. I really felt very bad for him asked him to take rest and to ask for any sort of help, if needed. I started feeling low because this was second time it was happening to me. With due course of time I have realized the importance of time and today I use it so that its output is positive. I started watching different videos from YouTube to improve my teaching skills. I read some articles and also made some worksheets for next time. I worked on my strategy of teaching and learning from my mistakes. I observed many things from my fellow mates who were doing their jobs very sincerely. My today’s experience was not as excited as I thought it to be but it all counts to make a being.

Teaching in Ashram 9

Life is a crazy ride and nothing is guaranteed. Raja’s exams are in next week and today he showed me a last year question paper. I asked him if he wanted to discuss it. He nodded his head for yes and asked some doubts. I cleared his doubts and asked him to solve the questions from question paper. The problem he was facing was the difficult words. He was continuously asking me different words and their meanings. I remember he asked me “limit” and I replied “I told you this last time”. He tried to remember but failed. I was facing the difficulty that I need to repeat everything again and again. Actually the main problem with his is the confusion between same type of words or difficulty in remembering.

I saw him getting confused between “woke” & “walk” or “write” & “right” etc. This time I focused on the paper and tried to give him the best ways to remember his mistakes. Each one has an interesting field and way of studying I forced his mind to find the best suitable way for himself. His confidence level is good just I need to give him boosts so that it doesn’t come down.

ALL THE BEST RAJA…..

Reflection on the second newsletter (November issue)

I am really happy because this time also I am the interviewer in news later. This time I am tried my best to overcome all my mistakes I did in last month’s issue. I prepared all my questions and also search for questions in many books, interviews of many popular people and tried to connect those questions, but I got very few. I checked all questions and also gave a copy to our editor to check it. My teammates were very helpful to each other and we worked hard to make news letter a hit. Then I thought of doing it with new tactic i.e. writing it in shorthand. But to be in safer side I also recorded it. It was a good idea as to understand I used many raw words and signs. I sent a softcopy of interviews to editor to edit it. News letter is a good ways to get updates of school and people around and their views. I strongly feel that I can do better if given a chance.

Teaching in Ashram 8

Why to try

When we fail

Why to try

When it’s like hell

Why to try

When we always go down

We have to try

Coz it will help you to shine

Never give up for anything

Try and try and you will get everything

Life is a cycle with good and bad time

See I made another rhyme.

Time is a very complicated thing which can make or break. Time can make anyone feel low. Only one boost is required to show that one can do it. This time when I reached there I got news that Veer is not coming back. It was hard to digest but that was the fact.

Raja did as I instructed him to do. He wrote 5 new words came across him in daily life. I gave him 10 more and asked him to write sentences on them after explaining their meanings. The biggest problem I faced this time was the repetition of same mistake while sentence construction. I showed him each and every mistake and asked him to rewrite it. I found that I am evolving my skill of explaining. He got it and he did it right.

Next, I started with “Voices” and I explained him the difference between Active and Passive voice. I am taking the help of “Comprehensive High School English Grammar & Composition Book” to explain him with examples. I did research and found that this book has very easy language. I took initiative and made plan to explain him and got this book. I think Raja will also do wonderful service works and will be a great citizen of society. If each person will think in this way to educate the poor then we will be progressing towards our goal i.e. a “no difference state”. We will surely be making a big difference globally. I will start working on worksheets and papers for next time.

Teaching in Ashram 7

My motto of “try and try until you succeed” is perfectly applying on Raja but I am extremely disappointed by Veer’s work or it will be better if I say no work. He went to some place and is not back till now. This time I was ready with the worksheets I made for them in last class when they were not here. I gave him the worksheet and told him the time limit. I like it, when he completed it correct 1 min early and said “completed sir”. Then I gave him another worksheet and started checking it. I marked where he went wrong and then started discussing his mistakes with him. There were some places where I was unable to understand him because he was using ‘Marathi’ word and I was trying to explain him in Hindi. There were some silly mistakes and some spelling mistakes. I was happy because he was trying his best to do and understand whatever I was trying to tell. I got to know that I need to learn some “Marathi” to be comfortable with him. Now, it’s really a new task for me. I will take help from our school Hindi teacher as she good in Marathi. This time I gave a new task and asked him to write all new words encountered by him in his day to day. This will be a great practice for him to increase his vocabulary.

Teaching in Ashram 6

Miracles come in moments. Be ready to handle them. You have only few moments to show. I am trying to build confidence in him by encouraging him to speak and show his ideas by best possible way. He is learning to speak few lines and can introduce himself. He told me about his coming exams.
Now, I will be planning according to his school pattern so, that he can score better. This is the show time when both of us will be tested. I asked him few grammatical questions and he replied well to it. I made him write some difficult spellings used in day today life. Giving an introduction to letter writing was fun. Now, you must be thinking “How can explaining about letter writing be fun?” It was fun because there were many comedy scene came in between while translating. In spite of so many days of coming here, still I am finding some difficulty in explaining him some terms. I am trying to make my explanation as simple as possible so that he doesn’t lose interest. Here, my main aim is not to pass time or do everything in hurry but to evolve his thinking and to improve his English. This will be beneficial to society because he will become a great being with good heart.

Teaching in Ashram 5

“Men's best successes come after their disappointments.” -  HENRY WARD BEECHER (Proverbs from Plymouth Pulpit)

Accepting this quote I continued my work. I was disappointed when I saw that both the students of mine were not present and were out of town. I was actually confused about my work. All my planning was washed away. I inquired about their return and got the good news that they will come this week. I sat in my usual place and started to search  worksheets, questions, examples to explain any doubt and videos to increase their interest. I found some worksheets from-

I helped Dasom and Hyunju as there was some conversation gap between them and their student. I checked many sites and picked some questions from above sites and also took help from www.youtube.com.

Teaching in Ashram 4

This time I was 5 min late because on my way petrol of my bike dried. I reached and my student Raja was waiting for me. Veer is not well that's why he is not attending the class. I washed my hands because they were smelling like petrol. I started class asked about his experience when he went to Shimla. Then I gave him one of the worksheet which I prepared in last class. When they were not there. Worksheet timing was 20 min in between which he asked me his doubts in question paper. Now he is becoming more and more open and asks more doubts now. He solved it and then we discussed the worksheet. He is working hard which can be seen in his improvements. From next time I am going to make worksheets on sentence correction and formations.

reflection on the first newsletter (October issue)

This was an amazing feeling, when we completed our first news letter. We really worked hard for this news letter. As this was our first news letter, we started with collecting ideas about making of the news letter. All came up with different ideas for it. We pooled all ideas and with a format which included introduction to IB curriculum, head master’s views and interviews of all the DP teachers, as it is starting of our session. We distributed all work among ourselves, and started working on it. My duty was to take two interviews, one of ‘head master’ and another of any ‘DP teacher’. This was my first interview as an interviewer. So first, I prepared the questionnaires and then with the help voice recorder I rec0rded the interviews and later I made a hard copy of that. This was a new task for me as I did this job first time. I think I was successful as it was liked by all. It was a bit difficult for me to understand when I was listening to interviews from recorder. It was an amazing experience and I will love to do it again.

Teaching in Ashram 3

I started my class 5 min early because I reached there at 12 and had 15 min left with me. I love to teach them because during teaching they are not the only one learning but I also learn many things about human behavior and techniques of teaching. From my present knowledge and experience I can say that teaching is not an easy task. I myself prepared few tests and asked them to solve that. I realized that Raja‘s grasping power is very good because he gets the point very fast. Next time, I am planning to get some printed worksheets for them to solve and understand in deep. This will increase their interest in the subject and then they will try to find new ways to learn more and I will get more and more things to teach. Now a days, they also ask me about some of their other doubts. They feel satisfied after my guidance.

Teaching in Ashram 2

Planning went in vain when I found that in rush I forgot the worksheet I made for Veer and Raja. When I saw them they were having big nutty smile on their faces. I sarcastically asked them “What’s the matter?” and they replied “Sir, please teach us about laptop.” I smiled and had no words. I checked their knowledge in 5 questions and started with basic booting. I told them about the difference in cold and warm booting. Showed them videos and told them about the different uses of computer/laptop in life. I am friendly with them so that they don’t hesitate to ask me anything. I will surely make some new work sheets and will bring the old one also so that they can practice it as homework.

Teaching in Ashram 1

DSC01697
Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.
Henry Ford
This quote brought a big difference in my thinking. I was very happy when, we planned our new task of going to Vidharbh Vanvasi Ashram and teaching kids. We consulted the authority and told them about our plans. The authority got impressed and asked us to start as soon as possible. They were very happy and praised us for doing such a good job. They consulted about the timing as they were more concern for us and were having no problem in any time. After our discussion we came to conclusion of coming every week which was Saturday 12 noon. After all this I was very eager to meet them. I started thinking that the children will be of grade 3rd, 4th and 5th.

When I went to Vidharbh Vanvasi Ashram I was shocked to see that my students Veer and Raja were of 12th and 11th respectively. I introduced myself and started to know, how much they knew about English. So, that I get some clue on how much they know? Here, I learnt to explain and got to know what difference it makes to them. In this competitive world I will help them to progresses.

I started with the basics and taught them to greet and introduce themselves. I faced problem when I was unable to explain them some meanings and then I explained them from pictures. I also gave them some ideas about the functioning of laptop. They both were happy as their face were glowing.
